    07/03 photo page restored.

    Jan 2010 news archive page created.

    The following photo's have been on The Class 47 List news page during the past four weeks and are waiting to be moved to archive pages;

    1964: D1733 at Birmingham Snow Hill, taken after 20th June 1964, but possibly in July or August of that year not too long after entering service in XP64 colours and still with BR logo on a red background. Brian Morrison's 'Profile of the 47s' book from 1987 has an image of 47853 without BR logos taken on 2nd May 1965, this is the earliest photo with a confirmed date that has been found of the loco without BR logos - though some reports say they were removed after the initial press runs. Evidently the logos lasted a bit longer, as here it can be seen that the white tyres which it had when painted have faded somewhat. The weathered appearance of the loco however is caused by this being from an old negative.

    27/03/85: 47159 passing Branksome hauling that morning's 6O33 0115 Aberthaw-Hamworthy.

    10/08/85: 47614 (47853) at Edinburgh Waverley on an unknown working.

    31/08/85: 47288 at Goose Hill Junction, near Normanton, working 1E05 0740 Leicester-Scarborough.

    01/03/86: An unknown working, but during a day of diversions, this is 47484 at Bordesley Junction on the line from Derby to Kings Norton, diverted via Lifford Curve before Kings Norton to head back into Birmingham New Street station. Alan Marshall posted in the news page comments section; "This was during a 5-week period of planned diversions during renewal of the bridge at Proof House Junction, near Birmingham New Street. Kings Norton became the main interchange for Birmingham passengers using Cross Country services." Any further info from this day is of course welcome for contribution.

    16/06/86: 47270 at Copmanthorpe heading northboud, possibly having come from Liverpool. This area now has AC electrification, and 270 in preservation (and back on the mainline of course) has had a headcode box cut into the newer cab front that can be seen in this view.

    27/06/87: 47549 passes Kinterbury on the Berks & Hants route heading towards London Paddington on what was a Saturday. This unknown working was thought to have been covering for a class 50 judging by the air-con stock, but all vehicles except the brake vehicle at the rear are first class carriages, so being a Saturday this could be a charter. A look at sixbellsjunction.co.uk reveals there was a High Wycombe-Bournemouth charter using 'at least 47466' on this day though this would be a little off route for that. Any suggestions to sulzerpower@yahoo.co.uk

    xx/02/88: An image of 47542 at Glasgow Central, waiting to depart on what was likely to have been a Carlisle service via the G+SW route. 47542 and 47456 were chosen for an air management scheme trial in 1985 and in January of that year both locos were noted as having had their No. 1 end bodyside windows converted from windows to grilles. By October 1985 the No. 2 end bodyside windows on 47542 (this end in the image above) were again replaced with grilles. In July 1986 both bodyside engine room doors were fitted with two grilles as part of a further air management trial. It is thought that the extra grilles, which can just about be seen in this image, had little or no affect on air flow within the loco but no official conclusion is known about. And thus by December 1988 47542 was noted as having standard bodyside doors, possibly off a scrapper at Eastfield. 47456 on the other hand took no further part in the trial. Loco notes are from Nigel47417, a co-author of the Class 47 Data Files which are available to purchase by clicking here. The newest of which follows D1520 to D1549 (47001-016/421-47434) through their careers. Also thanks to Chicken.
    The Class 47 List archive for February 1988 has the following workings listed for 542;
    12/02/88 - 1C67 0730 Aberdeen-Carstairs.
    15/02/88 - 1C67 0730 Aberdeen-Carstairs to Edinburgh?
    19/02/88 - 1V59 0720 Glasgow C-Penzance from Birmingham New Street? (more likely to be 'to' New Street)
    23/02/88 - 1H25 0740 Aberdeen-Inverness and then with 47643 on 1T30 1225 Inverness-Glasgow QS (tandem?).

    18/03/89: This was a day of diversions over the Settle & Carlisle, though this was a Carlisle-Leeds train, with 47413 hauling it and seen at Baron Wood on the S&C. 413 was seen calling at Appleby heading north at 1035 and south again at 1330.

    03/05/89: 47550 in May 1989, departing Forres on 1A50 1200 Inverness-Aberdeen whilst still in large logo livery.

    02/06/89: 47540 at White Waltham between Maidenhead and Twyford on an evening working, possibly the 1755 Paddington-Westbury?

    22/08/89: Three and a half months later than the large logo view of the loco, here is 'University of Dundee' 47550 in a fresh coat of paint seen at Allanfearn after leaving Inverness on 6H11 1115 Inverness-Burghea.

    15/09/90: 47528 runs round its train at Reading, which was forming 1O10 0738 York-Poole. 47605 is on the right.

    25/09/90: In a world (outside of NSE or PTE areas) of bland colours, the appearance of the new parcels livery was quite stunning. 47559 'Sir Joshua Reynolds' was seen above at Reading on a parcels train heading for London. In the archive pages, 559 is listed as working 1F52 1808 Paddington-Oxford on Thursday 27th September 1990, but no other passenger workings are known for that week. Parcels livery was last carried by 47575 in 2009, but this was painted out of the livery before the 20th anniversary of the first red+grey 47. The successor to the design, the Res livery, is still carried by 47492 to an extent and fully on 524, 707, 716, 746, 761, 765, 770, 771, 772 and 776.

    18/07/92: 47049 departs Derby with 1E95 0946 Great Yarmouth-Sheffield which it had worked from Norwich. 47194 had worked the train in to Norwich, 194 later continuing with 1M03 1034 Great Yarmouth-Birmingham New Street from Norwich.

    13/08/92: 47270 at Sherbourne on 1V15 1515 Waterloo-Exeter. Photo Copyright: Crumb

    04/03/93: 47840 looking a bit lost and unusually at Woking on 1V15 1515 Waterloo-Exeter. No other workings are known for the loco on that date.
    Photo Copyright: Crumb

    11/10/93: 47975 at Crewe on a test working. The loco survives in the same Civil Engineers colours, in fact it's the sole 47 now carrying the livery, with its previous number of 47540 and is in a poor external condition at Leeming Bar. During its time as a 47/9 it was also fitted with green circle multiple working sockets as can be seen here, though not in the same position as fitted to the freight 47/0 and 47/3s.

    08/03/95: 47744 before its naming ceremony where it was named Saint Edwin, at Leeds - which has changed quite a bit since. 744 still survives, in EWS colours at Barrow Hill, owned by Nemesis Rail. EWS livery is also still carried by preserved 47785 and 47793 and Riviera's stored 47747.

    24/02/97: Freightliner's 47302 seen at Doncaster, next to a selection of stored class 141s.

    02/02/98: A lesser mentioned 'celebrity' repaint, in these days at least, is 47519 - seen escaping from Twerton Tunnel working 4V60 Calvert to Bristol/Bath working. 519 survived in traffic another year before being dumped in the sidings at the former Crewe Diesel Depot for several years.

    10/09/98: 47204 became the 12th of 33 Brush Type 4 bodyshells to be re-worked with GM engines, becoming 57012 which has been partnering 47501 on the Workington-Maryport shuttles all week (47 photo's now added to the photo page). Possibly its final passenger working with a Sulzer power unit was this train, the 09xx Holyhead-Euston which it hauled from Holyhead to Crewe after running light to Holyhead from Crewe during the night. 47847 was the culprit in tow which required assistance. Did 47204 work any other passenger trains after this, or around this time?
