18/03/89: This was a day of diversions over the Settle & Carlisle, though this was a Carlisle-Leeds train, with 47413 hauling it and seen at Baron Wood on the S&C. 413 was seen calling at Appleby heading north at 1035 and south again at 1330.

28/03/89: 47542 was shown recently here with additional cooling grills in its engine room doors and windows, here shortly before the end of its career it can be seen that the engine room windows and doors have (as mentioned) returned to normal. The occasion above was a Euston-Warcop charter, which 47542 was involved with from Appleby Shunt Neck to Warcop (hauled by 47441), 542 hauled the train back from Warcop where it was seen above on an organised photo stop, to Appleby.
542 then worked light to Motherwell, then on 29/03/89 to Eastfield before heading to Edinburgh Waverley for that evening's 1E18 mail train to King's Cross, arriving in the early hours of the 30th. It worked 0C00 light engine to Stratford at 0600 and 20 minutes after arrival it was hit by 08527 and never worked again. The 08 survived however and in recent years was based at Ilford.

21/04/89: 47461 at Inverness with the 1230 to Glasgow. 461 was the only 47/4 to receive the "Scotrail" blue stripe livery. 461's last working was a 'Pennine' into Liverpool on 17/11/90, after which it was retired to Allerton for brake repairs. The next day it was being reversed into some stock after no fault had been found at Lime Street and it smashed into the stock of a Liverpool-Euston it was about to drag, and was soon written off. Interestingly, the no.1 end cab (seen here) was salvaged to repair 568, which got pranged at Bristol Bath Road, and survives today (for now) on stored 47726. Copyright: Andy Barnes

17/09/89: 47599 at Crewe, which was to become 47743 - unfortunately only really remembered for being involved in a derailment north of York after speeding over some points and ended up down a bank. It was so badly damaged that it had to be cut up on site, becoming the first 47/7 to be cut up since fire damaged Scottish 47713. Copyright: Andy Barnes

30/12/89: A rare photo of 47616 hauling a 4TC unit, more usually hauled by class 33's or 50's. 616 had just arrived with a semi fast from Waterloo on the penultimate day of the 1980's. This was during the period when 50's had taken over from 33's on the Waterloo-Salisbury semi-fasts hauling 4TC units. Class 50 availability was not at its best and 33's continued to substitute, this being an extremely rare occasion when a 47 covered one of these workings. Copyright: Neil Walkling
