21/01/98: 47712 leads 47814 at Hinksey Yard, Oxford, heading northbound at about 1300. 47814 appears to have suffered either a fire or from a leak, can anyone confirm if this was the case? This would appear to be a late running 1S76 0920 Brighton-Edinburgh Waverley via Bolton, which was class 47 hauled to Preston (see 1S76.com if you haven't before).Photo Copyright: Howard Osiransky

02/02/98: A lesser mentioned 'celebrity' repaint, in these days at least, is 47519 - seen escaping from Twerton Tunnel working 4V60 Calvert to Bristol/Bath working. 519 survived in traffic another year before being dumped in the sidings at the former Crewe Diesel Depot for several years.

25/02/98: Still in existance but stored unserviceable at Basford Hall is 47289, when seen at Lower Basildon heading for Southampton in 1998 it had another two tone green repaint from the 1990s in tow - 47114, which even managed to haul some passenger trains in this Freightliner branded style.

04/09/98: Some of you may not be aware of the page that exists on this site with photo's of no heat loco's on Virgin Cross Country, initiated thanks to photo's from co-news editor Crumb. On there is a photo by Nigel Benning of 47326 hauling 1O38 1406 Birmingham-Bournemouth at Brockenhurst on 4th September 1998 with the number 1 end leading. Here 326 is shown at South Moreton after passing Didcot on 1O38, no.1 end leading - proof that 1O38 on this date must have avoided Reading. 1O38 was booked to reverse at Reading, the return 1M81 avoided Reading at the time.

10/09/98: 47204 became the 12th of 33 Brush Type 4 bodyshells to be re-worked with GM engines, becoming 57012 which has been partnering 47501 on the Workington-Maryport shuttles all week (47 photo's now added to the photo page). Possibly its final passenger working with a Sulzer power unit was this train, the 09xx Holyhead-Euston which it hauled from Holyhead to Crewe after running light to Holyhead from Crewe during the night. 47847 was the culprit in tow which required assistance. Did 47204 work any other passenger trains after this, or around this time?
