A steam loco worked the return to Crewe via the S&C, with 194+217 taking over to work back to Didcot which would be both of their final passenger workings (1Z44 1310 Carlisle-Didcot Parkway, see the links below the photo's for the final passenger workings links).

12/06/99: 47702 'County of Suffolk' is another loco that was withdrawn 10 years ago this month as per 584 shown yesterday, this was another EWS loco and along with 47711 'County of Hertfordshire' the pair were painted from two tone grey and NSE livery respectively into Virgin colours in September 1998 and spent the remainder of their operating lives in the ILRA VXC TOPS pool. 702 was about to work 1M81 1705 Weymouth to Manchester (to Birmingham?), the final working for 702 would come on 16/03/00 when it worked 1M56 from Penzance to Birmingham and then took over 1V98 1810 Liverpool-Paddington at Birmingham at 2006, suffering a main generator flashover before Birmingham International (anyone know what rescued this?)

23/10/99: 47114 on passenger trains; here it is after it's final working - 2D20 1816 Bargoed-Cardiff Central. At the time it was the penultimate survivor of the class 48s (47114-8 - all converted to 47s before TOPS renumbering happened) and was the subject of a preservation proposal although this unfortunately failed and the loco was eventually cut up. 47117 of course still exists in preservation and can be found on occasion working trains at the Great Central Railway.
