10/06/77: 47432 at Kings Cross. 432 has the first type of headlight that 47s received - fitted underneath the drivers side tail light. Few carried these, possibly only 432/434/523 and 601 (and later as 901 when re-engined).

15/08/79: 47450 in Holyhead shed with 08907. The original 'modification' to the former head-code box cover was often to simply cover/paint the original perspex/glass black with two white dots in the middle. Modifications in the 80's resulted in these being replaced with metal covers and two lenses where the dots were with either flat unopenable lenses for the marker lighting (flat ones were usually at the number 1 end, 432 in the photo above dated 10/06/77 is one of the only ones I've ever seen with flat lenses at the number 2 end) or fitted with hinged lenses to enable access to the marker light within. 450 above, with the original quick mod appears to have just had some black tape placed over the center - around the edges appears here to still be see through.

28/11/82: 47571 at Stafford on the morning of Sunday 28 November 1982, having just been released from the front of the 1042 Manchester-Euston. 87006, which was in tow, went forward. Back in the early '80s, everything out of Manchester on a Sunday morning was dragged as far as Stafford, although Euston trains only ran at two hourly intervals. The last dragged service was the 1447 Manchester-Euston which, unlike the other workings, was only dragged as far as Stoke. Cross Country services were also approximately two hourly and were hauled by diesel loco's throughout, the last one off Manchester being the 14xx to
Birmingham and beyond and the last into Manchester still with a diesel on was the the morning Gatwick - Manchester train (which was always 47537!).

The next day it was being reversed into some stock after no fault had been found at Lime Street and it smashed into the stock of a Liverpool-Euston it was about to drag, and was soon written off. 25/05/91: In the middle is 47593 whilst working the Inverness sleeper, it had come to assist 47806 which failed at milepost 51.25 on the Highland Main Line at Drumochter. 806 was on a Nenta tour from North Walsham to Kyle. 593 assisted from mp51.25 to Dalwhinnie where 47604 took over the Nenta. In the image above the train consisted of 47806(dead)+load 12+47593+load 14!!! The return NENTA was worked by 47801 with 47806 dead in tow from Inverness to Perth for 806 forward alone. 47801 being in that area is a bit of a mystery! Copyright: Andy Ashton
