From tour passenger Peter Weber: "Lead by 47815, the train came to an abrupt stop at MP60 1/2 between Abington & Beattock Summit, albeit managing to restart ok.
A second abrupt stop occurred near Kingmoor Yard, where after about 20 mins a restart was made with 47853 push/pulling into the station at Carlisle. The speed was no more than about 25mph for these few miles and I heard someone on the train say that we were being driven from 47853.
"A further lengthy delay occurred at Carlisle, where eventually it was decided to detach and turn the locos on a triangle in Carlisle. We restarted 65 mins late with 47853 working solo. Good running and the lack of a Carnforth pathing stop pulled arrears back to 40 mins passing Preston but we were stuck behind a local service from Wigan to Manchester Vic, extending arrears to 60-65 mins again."
Problems were believed to be multiple working related. Future tours are likely to involve multiple working.
From tour steward Gordon Glossop: "Outward trip was without incident, 815 worked Gresty Bridge-Crewe station (ECS), 853 Crewe-Stoke (ECS, 853 then run round), then 853+815 in multi Stoke-Congleton-Edinburgh. On the return which was 815+853 in multi, 815 shut down three times, once between Haymarket and Carstairs, once between Carstairs and Beattock, and finally (and terminally) 4.75 miles north of Carlisle. 853 pushed dead 815 into Carlisle station then the pair were turned on the Upperby triangle so 853 was leading dead 815 Carlisle-Congleton-Stoke, then I presume 853 ran round at Stoke and Crewe to get the set back onto the Down Holding.
