    9th December 2010

    A-Line, Pelaw - by 08/10 - R29MFM acquired and in service, ex M Travel.
Bennetts of Kilwinning - RUI9480 (R992EWU) and RUI9481 (R991EWU) work services 27 or 29 from Irvine. They've been joined by sister R990EWU, all three having come from JP Minicoaches and previously National Express.

    Blackpool Transport - 215 T215HCW above on new route 17 from Blackpool to Lytham on 29th July 2010. 215 was the last Excel painted in to this livery. 211 T211HCW was the first Excel painted in the new Blackpool black and yellow livery (see last update), entering service in early August 2010. Service changes which coincided with the new livery in July lead to Excels operating on different routes, previously they were used on 'line 7' which operated from Cleveleys to Lytham, and extending to Wesham on evenings and Sundays. New routes that the Excels have been operating on are covered below;

221 T884RBR stands at Poulton on route 2 which runs from here to the centre of Blackpool. Previously operated by Solos, the route used to extend south beyond Blackpool to South Shore and even further via the old tram route along Whitegate Drive.
221 T884RBR (seen above on 01/12/10), 222 T932EAN, 223 T933EAN, 225 T935EAN, 226 T936EAN retain 6BT engines, all other Blackpool Excels have the newer ISBe version. 224 T934EAN is the latest vehicle to be away for fitment of an ISBe.

Every other route 2 from Blackpool extends north to Knott End, on the other side of the River Wyre to Fleetwood, the service operating as the 2C. The 2 and 2C are now usually operated entirely by Excels. 226 T936EAN in the former 'line 7' purple livery stands at Knott End Ferry on 1st December 2010.

Another route which sees Excels is route 17 which ran in July from Blackpool to Lytham via St Annes (as shown in the 215 pic), though now only runs to St Annes with a route 18 operating the rest of the way. Neither route are as direct as other services between the towns. 223 T933EAN is at St Annes Square amongst Christmas lights on 01/12/10 before running back to Blackpool, it's destination box steamed up in below freezing weather conditions.
Route 5, which was the home of 210-8 T210-8HCW in the early millennium, and route 1 from Blackpool town centre to Fleetwood has seen occasional Excel operation recently, route 1 having 212 T212HCW, 216 T216HCW and 225 T935EAN in use on one day in place of new vehicles. Line 1 used to be worked by double deckers.
Blackpool images were taken by the editor.

Carters Coaches, Kings Lynn - P192SGV carries fleetnumber 292, seen at Colchester on 04/12/10. Thanks to Wayne Bell for the image.
(ex) Cumfybus of Southport - N205LCK moved to Richard Bros of Cardigan by 10/10. The other two former Cumfybus Excels ended up with Wealden PSV Sales in Northfleet by 02/10 - pioneer of the fleet TIL2099 (N330EUG) and N202LCK.

Edwards of Llantwit Fadre - R209DKG here (photographed by Glyn Williams on 4th August 2010) had previously operated with Red Arrow, Huddersfield.

East Yorkshire Motor Services - S288RAG is believed to still be fitted with the original Euro 2 Cummins 6BT engine as reported at the June update, others all have the new ISBe unit. S287RAG was seen on 30th March 2008.
East Yorkshire's website includes an excellent enthusiast section which is worth a look and can be seen by clicking here.
Galleon/Trustline of Harlow - This operator used P501OUG, P504OUG, P506OUG and P508OUG briefly, since this P504OUG and P508OUG are believed to have moved at some point to Rowe & Tudhope in Kilmarnock.
GHA Coaches, Ruabon - N201LCK and N206LCK are numbered SB35 and SB36, though 201 is currently off the road at Ruabon depot.
JP Travel, Middleton - V210ENU is the third Excel with this company, though now carries their private plate V2JPT and fleet number 172. It last operated with Hunt's of Alford.
King of the Road (Pilkington), Accrington - S289RAG and S291RAG are still owned, obtained from EYMS on the 12th August 2006. Only S289RAG is currently available for service, though before this summer it had not been used for some time.
King, Kirkcowan - R280EKH moved to Moseley (dealer) 02/10, and sold onward to a new owner in Loughrea in Galway, Ireland in July, it operates a service for a local night club.

Lodge Coaches, Chelmsford - V118LVH is one of two Excels operated by Lodge, seen at their depot open day on 29th August 2010.

Also present was their other Excel, V936VUB. Thanks to Simon Coates for both photographs.

Meridian Bus - DAZ4301, now P347LEY (ex P201BNR and WAZ8276 though!), from Kimes of Folkingham and Trent is now with Meridian. It was awaiting a gearbox overhaul when purchased and will be painted before being put into service. A repainted R845FWW has still been operating, though sister R846FWW is still waiting to return to the road.
    M Travel - P152CTV had entered service by the start of September 2010 having moved in July, R29MFM having moved to A Line of Pelaw. Their Excels are 028 R28MFM, 029 R29MFM, 079 V79JKG, 152 P152CTV and 273 P273NRH.
Malta - FBY805 remains in use, this sole example of the type operating in Malta was the first low floor vehicle to operate on the island, though when Arriva Malta take over this could ironically be withdrawn as the Maltese government are believed to have requested a maximum age of 12 years for service buses, this Excel was new in 1997. I'm not sure whether this ruling applies also to private hire or school only vehicles, if not then it could continue in use on other duties.
Midland - R987EWU and R744BUJ have been sold, R-EWU was numbered 154 at Longton as part of the D&G fleet and had been used until suffering a gearbox failure, it was sold alongside stored former 144 R744BUJ. S3CLA (153) remains in use at Longton, 6002 S2CLA and 6743 R743BUJ are in use with Midland in the Wolverhampton area, 6002 now fitted with Mobitec electronic destination display equipment.
Nottingham Transport - 550 FD51EYS is believed to have been withdrawn during the summer, by 07/10.

P&O, Dover - Above is an image of former demonstrator X538NWT, showing it's dual door layout and luggage racks inside, neither of which are believed to have been fitted when the vehicle was in use with other operators.
Richard Bros, Cardigan - N205LCK arrived on 09/10/10, likely to be for spares. The last operator of this bus was Cumfybus.
P508NWU had also arrived from Trent Barton by 08/10.

Smith's of Keith - Another one for scrap, seen above on 31/10/09, one of very few series 1 Excels which was new to a Scottish operator, P813OET (HCO514), sold by 08/10.
South Wales Transport - S926LBL and S930LBL moved here from Vale Travel of Aylesbury via Southdown PSV, by 07/10. Our previous news report shows that by April, R916SJH was in use and possibly S930LBL.
Stagecoach Yorkshire - On the subject of ex Blackpool Excels, unfortunately 35016 N207LCK is also reported as having been scrapped by 09/10 after having failed on the way to a new life with Stagecoach Bluebird. N208LCK is believed to remain in use. 35018 P222ABC was also expected to move to Bluebird but did not and remains withdrawn. N207LCK had entered service at the Chesterfield depot in March 2007 after returning to Optare for attention. Both this and N208LCK had moved south from Stagecoach Western in February 2007 having been aquired with the operations of Docherty of Irvine in 2004.
    Chesterfield depot operate; 35000 YN51VHH, 35001 YN51VHJ, 35002 YN51VHK, 35003 YN51VHL, 35004 YN51VHM, 35005 YN51VHO, 35006 YN51VHP, 35017 N208LCK, 35019 P333ABC, 35020 R11ABC, 35021 R641MBV, 35022 R643MBV, 35023 JAZ9851, 35025 P937SSK.

Thompsons Tours of Christchurch - P321KAR was a surprise return to service, by 08/10 and seen above at Ringwood on 11/08/10 in South Gloucestershire livery. Thanks to Peter Cook H&DW&D for the photos.
It joins P429AHR (P446SWX) which had returned to service earlier in the year at the expense of N204LCK which is believed to have been scrapped. During it's early years as an Optare demonstrator P446SWX spent a long time on hire to Harris Bus covering for their own Excels which had returned to the Optare factory. It operated very briefly in Blackpool too, no other locations are known.

P429AHR on 21st April 2010, thanks to Ant for the photo.

TM Travel, Halfway - None of the Mark 1 Excels are believed to have sold at their depot auction on 03/07/10, though may have been all sold since, these vehicles were 1126 P505OUG, 1133 R374DJN, 1134 R379DJN, 1135 R211DKG, 1136 R213DKG and 1140 V389KVY.
W213PRB and W214PRB were already in TM livery, W215PRB had joined them having entered previously service in unbranded livery - it had been repainted by 09/10 when it attended Showbus at Duxford as shown in Mark Youdan's photo taken on 26/09/10 which provides a comparison between the Excel and Versa stylings. Which one do you prefer?
Trent Barton and Notts & Derby - In July Volvo B10M/ Plaxton Interurban coaches 59 and 60 appeared to be transferring from TransPeak duties to Red Arrow spares, later joined by coach 62, which saw TransPeak 157 S157UAL and 158 S158UAL continue in service, others in the same livery are series 2 vehicles 224 W224PRB, 231 X231WRA and 232 X232WRA in the same livery.
By October, 261 Y261DRC and 263 Y263DRC are in Trent Barton red and operating from Sutton Junction, whilst 262 Y262DRC is in a red livery advertising some of Trent's services.
Now reinstated is 264 Y264DRC, painted in a mint green livery for recently won tender for the 409 service, Ashbourne to Uttoxeter. It was previously in the red Skyline livery.
    L1180 258 Y258DRC by 07/10, plus 221 W221PRB and 222 W302PRB by 08/10 moved from Trent Barton to Notts & Derby, joined by 223 W223PRB, 230 W998PRB, 259 Y259DRC by 09/10.

A brief note to point out that a news update is forthcoming, it's also getting to that time of year again to check the status of all the vehicles, so if you know of any Excels which have changed ownership recently or become stored or conversely returned to traffic you can let me know at slc9t9@yahoo.com

Also if you're fed up with checking the site and seeing it hasn't been updated, please also email me at slc9t9@yahoo.com and ask to be kept in touch when the site is updated - I email the site viewers every time a news update has taken place due to the infrequency of the updates and the large amount of info that is compiled in each one.
In the mean time, above is a photo taken at the recent Blackpol Transport open day (copyright of Shaun C.) on 26th September 2010 showing their new standard fleet livery applied to T211HCW.

    11th June 2010

    Changes
Arriva Milton Keynes - operate V392/3KVY, Arriva was taken over by Deutsche Bahn on 22/04/10.
Blackpool Transport - Blackpool Transport operate 210-8 T210-8HCW, 219-21 T880/1/4RBR, 222-6 T932-6EAN, they are currently mainly used on route 7 from Cleveleys to Lytham, with one or two per day appearing on route 14 from Fleetwood-Blackpool/St Annes (see spotting report below) - from 26th July 2010 as part of a set of route changes route 7 will become Optare Solo operated, with the Excels likely to move to the new route 11 which will operate from Lytham to Grange Park Estate. More on this once the services begin.
All except T932-6EAN at Blackpool Transport have been fitted with Cummins ISBe engines.
East Yorkshire Motor Services - R253PRH and R254PRH have been re-registered to A16/17EYC, by March 2010, moved from Pocklington and Hull depots respectively to Elloughton.
All of their Excels now except 288 have been fitted with the Euro 3 Cummins ISBe engine, S288RAG still has a Euro 2 Cummins 6BT.
Edwards, Llantwit Fardre - acquired R209DKG during April from Stafford Bus Centre, this is believed to have been up-seated to 43 with removal of its wheelchair areas, and is fitted with seat belts throughout. It sees some operation on their rouite 400E which operates through Llantwit Fardre to Cardiff Greyfriars Road.
Go Goodwin, Eccles - R373DJN is still registered WSV550, it had been for sale, presumably still at Go Goodwins as they own the private registration. R375DJN was however sold by them last year.

Go South Coast - HJ02WDG (above, photo copyright of Ant) which had seen use for a short time on the Isle of Wight with Southern Vectis, now operates at Ringwood outstation of Wilts & Dorset, mostly on service 36 to Bournemouth. Other Excels are at Poole and Salisbury.
JP Coaches, Forfar - previously reported was the acquisition of R991/2EWU, R990EWU also joined this from National Express Dundee in April (previously Travel Dundee). R991/2EWU have been re-registered to RUI9480/1 (the fourth Excel of this batch in Dundee was R985EWU which moved to McColl's of Balloch last year).

JP Travel, Middleton - previously reported and shown in photograph in April with this company was 171 - S928LBL which had arrived there ex New Adventure in Cardiff, also with JPT is 170 - S927LBL from the same company. 171 is named 'Gav jb' after someone on their Facebook site, and 170 is named 'Heavenly Harriet'. The two are easy to tell apart from a distance as they have differing destination equipment. Both have been re-upholstered and carry the yellow and blue fleet livery.

Lucketts of Fareham - 666VMX (above, photo copyright of Ant) was previously a registration used on a double deck coach, but is now on former P913SUM which is used on shuttles to Lakeside North Harbour as the livery suggests. Lucketts took over this shuttle from Roadliner, see 'Roadliner' below for info on K155ELF (T790KNW) which was previously in this livery and operating this service.

Midland - as previously reported have at least R743BUJ and S2CLA (11.5 metres long, above, photo copyright of Shaun C), operating, no report yet of R744BUJ. S3CLA was last known of at Crewe with R987EWU.

National Express West Midlands - repainted in the current National Express West Midlands livery which includes a red front (a bit confusing from a distance when a Midland bus comes along) are at least the following; R402HWU, R405HWU, R409HWU, R410HWU, and T714NOE. The R-HWUs were repainted after moving south from National Express Dundee (previously Travel Dundee).
Ogden, St Helens - from North West Bus Sales are X961/3BPA, ex Reading. Ogden have operated Excels in the past, including T342FWR which was later scrapped.
Richard Bros, Cardigan - have P508NWU, previously fleet number 900 in the Trent Barton fleet.
Roadliner - went out of business and K155ELF (T790KNW) has remained with Cavendish Liner who took over Roadliner's business and is now in Cavendish Liner's grey livery.
South Wales Travel - by April, R916SJH was in operation in white, and S930LBL was in use in white with green stripes. Both are ex Reading buses.
Stagecoach Yorkshire - withdrawn according to Buses magazine are 35016 N207LCK and 35018 P222ABC.
Thompson's, Ringwood - operating P429AHR which had been with Adam Barham (dealer). Various parts from N204LCK are believed to have been used to make one good bus, so we could soon see the end of the former Blackpool vehicle.
TM Travel - 214 W214PRB was in TM Travel livery by the start of May. 213 W213PRB is also in TM colours. 215 W215PRB had its Cotgrave Connection branding removed and entered service in April with a small TM Travel logo on the front end. They previously operated 1135 R211DKG, R213DKG, R379DJN and V389KVY, though R374DKG had been in use recently and 1126 P505OUG still is.
Some of the withdrawn examples may be working shuttle services for Notts & Derby this week for the 'Download [music] Festival 2010' at Donington Park, there are shuttle buses running from both Derby and East Midlands Parkway from Wednesday 9th June to Monday 14th June 2010.
    Trent - 231 and 232 (X-WRA) to Transpeak livery (ex Mickleover), replacing 157 and 158 (S-UAL).
261 Y261DRC is now in generic Trent Barton red and allocated to Derby as a spare vehicle. 264 Y264DRC expected to go into Route 1 Derby - Ashbourne livery later in the year when the service increases from hourly to half hourly. A number of Excels seem to have had accidents recently. 227 X227WRA and 243 Y243DRC being amongst those, both have been repaired.
Notts & Derby - 258 and 259 (Y-DRC) now in rainbow livery for Derby College Student Shuttle. 161 S161UAL is still operating in that livery, but is likely to be withdrawn soon.
    221 W221PRB, 222 W302PRB and 230 X998WRA now in Unibus blue/white/orange livery, ex Mickleover.
263 and 264 (Y-DRC) are still operating with Notts and Derby, 264 being a recent reinstatement possibly in connection with the Download Festival Shuttles.
Ceased operators; - No onward movement is known for any vehicles formerly of Essex County Buses or McKindless of Wishaw.
Sales - not a lot of Excels appear available for sale at the moment, S160UAL is though still available at Ventura sales.
Refurbishment - Optare offer a refurbishment programme at their Blackburn plant, obviously Excels are not produced any more but I would assume Excels would be able to be refurbished there as a non Optare product is depicted.

    Sightings
Viewers are invited to send in their sightings of Excels on service or details of routes that they operate. Click the 'email' button on the left if you would like to contribute.

T717NOE (717) parked outside Wolverhampton's former bus station waiting time to move on to a temporary bus stop in a nearby street. The bus station will reopen in the same location, it is currently being rebuilt.

Another Excel, T880RBR(219), was on route 14 workings from Fleetwood through to St Annes, a route which is being chopped in half as part of the forthcoming service changes.

Site notes - *note that none of the info shown here above or in the February and April news updates have been ammended on the Owner Index or Reference List, the news here is an update/supplement to those lists which are periodically updated*
However, the Lost Summary page has been updated, which records which registrations have been lost, for example those buses which have been scrapped or buses which have been re-registered and exported.
Operator names in the 'former operators' section only includes since the site started in 2008 and have been left in place for reference, there are no plans to add other previous Excel operators from before this date as it would take too much time to add all the relevant details though notes are kept about these.

Thanks very much for help with this update go to; Buses magazine (with permission), East Yorkshire Motor Services, Ant, GGC, Will Figg, Adrian Healey, Paul Turner.

    1st June 2010

Delving into the archives, here is 'The Revolutionary Excel' as T790KNW described itself when in use as a demonstrator for builder Optare.
It is seen between the former Odeon Cinema in Blackpool and North railway station in use with Blackpool Transport on 17th February 2001. It was quite revolutionary as it was the first Excel to be fitted with a Mercedes engine rather than the usual Cummins power unit, and was in fact the only series 1 Excel ever fitted with a Mercedes engine though that would later become standard on the series 2. Only a small number of the later build vehicles had Cummins engines (Reading's four X-BPA are noteable series 2 vehicles with Cummins engines).
Two months later the bus was sold by Optare for the first time to Ipswich from where it was withdrawn in January 2009. It has since moved to Dorset and is registered K155ELF!

Just a quick note to see that a full news round-up will be compiled within a few days, it had been a quiet six weeks here for Excel news hence no update.

News, photographs, questions and comments can be submitted to me at slc9t9@yahoo.com thanks.

15th April 2010 - which is further to the news update four days ago (see further down the page)

A page has been created to show the Excels converted for non-PSV use, click here to have a look, P315FAW is one of three converted for Rochdale Council - here I found it in Middleton town centre briefly on 15th April 2010, though it was only there for 15 minutes. Judging by the destination blind though it can probably be found in Middleton quite often. Sister P316FAW mentions Rochdale on its front end, and carries number 509 in the windscreen. Both were bought from Stafford Bus Centre (dealer) who had received them from Arriva. The headlight on both of them is smaller than usual Excels and presumably just one single light rather than a pair.

I was in Middleton at the time to have a ride on S928LBL, which was working route 17 shorts from Middleton Bus Station to Manchester's Shudehill. It has fleetnumber 171. Although repainted it's still fitted with the Reading route and destination blinds!
photo copyright of Shaun C, 15/04/10

From the archive, S928LBL in Reading days. In the meantime, it has operated for New Adventure Travel in Cardiff who bought S925/7-9/31LBL from a dealer. S928LBL definitely operated whilst in Wales, whilst I was sat at the back of the bus immediately in front of me there was graffiti which said 'Daniel ov Merthyr'!

A bit late now, but a link has been added to the fleet of Essex County Buses. It was there before, there just wasn't a link! Sorry. They had P191SGV, V119LVH, V930VUB, V937VUB, V938VUB, V939VUB and W429CWX, and also were possibly about to use R817WJA.

    11th April 2010

    Changes
*note that none of the info shown here or in February news has been ammended on the Owner Index or Reference List, the news here (below) is an update/supplement to those lists which are periodically updated*
The major news affecting Optare Excels is the end of McKindless of Wishaw (fleet page) who have operated no less than 27 of the type over the years.
Onward movement of the fleet is currently not known of here.
Essex County Buses also finished operating (final date unknown), they were developing a nice collection of Excels and had P191SGV, ex Ipswich, and the following from Meteor Parking; V119LVH, V930VUB, V937VUB, V938VUB, V939VUB and W429CWX. As per McKindless, no onward movement of the vehicles to other operators has been heard of here.

    Fleetnews
Meridian Bus - Short R845FWW and R846FWW returned back here by the start of April 2010, to clarify the status of these two which has been a bit confusing in recent years; 845 was acquired in summer 2008, 846 in November 2008 but both went to back to Dawson Rentals, where they had come from, for summer 2009. R845FWW is back on the road with them already.

Midland - R743BUJ has been repainted and refurbished internally, returning to service on 02/04/10 as number 6743 (S2CLA from 02/10 is 6002). R742BUJ with Blackpool Transport however has been sold for scrap after being used for spares as was intended when it was purchased. R744BUJ remains with the company and is currently out of use, and S3CLA + R987EWU are with D&G at Crewe.

GHA Travel - operate N201LCK and N206LCK ex Blackpool Transport, both are upgraded with more powerful Cummins engines out of scrap wagons and whilst they are more reliable than they were with original engines, the two mainly act as maintainance cover for other SLFs in fleet and as such mainly run on local journeys on routes 5, 9, 111 & 146. They also get loaned to Bryn Melyn & Vale Travel for use on their local routes.

Johnson's of Hodthorpe - P274NRH, recorded as being with the company by 2006, has been reported as having been with the company by at least July 2003 when it was painted all over white.

    Trent Barton etc -
Excels 223 (W223 PRB) and 236 (X236 WRA) to Notts and Derby and repainted into Unibus livery.
Excel 230 (X998 WRA) with Notts and Derby in former Mickleover livery.
Excels 263 and 264 (Y263/264 DRC) on loan to Notts and Derby for Derby Student Shuttles. 264 is thought to have gone back to Trent, following the arrival of 259 (Y259 DRC) in rainbow livery for the Student services. 258 expected shortly.
254/261 (Y254/261 DRC) into Trentbarton generic red livery.
255-257 (Y271/256/257 DRC) now in Trent's Amberline livery.
Former Cotgrave Excels 213 to 215 (W213 PRB etc) had been expected to pass to Notts and Derby. However 213 and 214 are passing to TM Travel...
214 is already in TM livery. Most, if not all of TM Travel's original Mark 1 Excels are withdrawn/off the road.
And finally, series 1 Excel L1070 900 (P508 EWU) has been sold.

    New to Excels
South Wales Transport - acquired three Excels in February 2010, operating R916SJH ex dealer stock at Southdown PSV which has joined the pair of fellow ex Reading buses from Vale Travel of Aylesbury - S926LBL and S930LBL, the R reg vehicle having been spotted on service 251 from Neath, and one of the S reg buses being seen at Port Talbot and Swansea.

Thompson's, Ringwood in Dorset who have an Excel for a Ringwood town service which starts on 12th April 2010.

JP Travel - had JEZ9739 (X964BPA ex Reading) briefly at their Manchester depot, it is now known if this has been returned but the company is now operating S928LBL in their yellow and blue colours carrying fleet number 171, it seems they have purchased at least one other.

    Re-registration
    JEZ9739 - ex X964BPA (a new re-registration)
    98-G-9242 - ex R986EWU
    98-G-9243 - ex R988EWU
    98-G-9338 - ex R989EWU
    98-G-9339 - ex R993EWU
Of the four Irish vehicles, exported to City Direct in Galway during 2003 from Travel London, only the identity of R988EWU had been confirmed here before now.

    1st February 2010

Wallace of Wembley - has the only dual door L1070 series 2, YJ51JXH. This has been used for many years as a private company driver trainer in the London area, and was possibly previously owned by Graham Oliver.
Only two other 2nd series L1070s were built; X307/8CBT at Guildford.
Essex County Buses - Not previously mentioned but P191SGV is in operation here. R817WJA (ex Stansted Transit) is also in their yard ready for a repaint. The other vehicles in their fleet are ex Meteor Parking.
Lodge, Chelmsford - who operate V936VUB also have V118LVH - both are also ex Meteor as per Essex County Buses and although the latter is on the reference page it is missing on the operator page on this site. V118LVH is reported as being converted to high density seating for possible school bus use in the future.
Tates Travel, Barnsley - P326NHJ has gone for scrap. Did this operate with them at all or was it just used for spares?
TM Travel (now Wellglade group) - R213DKG (and now possibly more) has been withdrawn and moved to Langley Mill. The company also owns P505OUG, R374DJN, R379DJN, R211DKG and V389KVY.

Their other Excel, P913SUM, has been reregistered to ??????? and may have been sold by Johnson's.
APL Travel have their two Excels, V78/81KMY for sale, for £10,000 each (initially listed at £22.5k). Click here for details, then click on their for sale page.

No longer for sale with Nigel McCree are P333HBC and P322KAR. X961BPA and X963BPA are however still advertised.

    Website update
The fleet lists have had their yearly update, the operator index (click 'owner index' in the bar on the left (or click here if you can't see that bar) has been fully updated and is hopefully now correct.
Some new operator pages have been added as those operators have acquired Excels in 2009 (or late 2008) and still operate them and these are; Bain of Oldmeldrum, C&S of Heathfield, Carter, Essex County Buses, EST Bus, Gwyn Williams, Heartland Bus, JP Minicoaches of Forfar, Lodge & Son of Chelmsford, McColl of Balloch, Meridian Bus, Mikro of Crewe, Roadliner of Dorset, Silverline of Merthyr, Speedwellbus of Hyde, Three Star Coaches of Luton, Vale of Aylesbury, Wallace of Wembley, Walters Limousines of Oxford and White Coaches of Culham.

The reference list page is being updated, most of that section should however be correct anyway.

Thanks to Colin Humphrey, Tony K, Buses magazine with permission.

    25th January 2010

Nigel McCree is still advertising P333HBC and P322KAR for sale, for £7,500 for the pair.

  • Further to the last news update, a trip to Dover showed V511KMY (now converted to dual door for internal port shuttles) and YA02YRP seen operating for P&O Ferries on Thursday 21st January 2010.
V511KMY was new as a demonstrator but featured the same interiors as P501-10OUG and operated for Metrobus of Orpington whilst other members of the fleet received repairs etc. It is not known whether the bus then saw demonstrator duties elsewhere, but it ended up with P&O.
Series 2 vehicle YA02YRP was also a demonstrator but has not been converted to dual door with P&O, and as such is used commonly on the railway station shuttle service - it also has a working digital destination blind - on 21/01/10 though the shuttle was only operating two thirds of the route because of roadworks at Dover Priory station. The very same pair of Excels were seen operating there a year earlier on 20/01/09.
Also in the P&O fleet are ex demonstrators W438CWX and X538NWT (both series 2s) and R818WJA and R819WJA which were new to Universal Buses of Chadderton but have been with P&O since at least 2003.

    17th January 2010 - Excel news update

Found!!!; X538NWT - is with P&O at Dover. A photo exists of it there in May 2009, it is likely to have been there several years longer though. Intitially a demonstrator, hence a Leeds registration mark, it has a Firstgroup interior and is believed to have carried the number 60150 at some point and is shown in some Manchester fleet lists. It has covered too at Ipswich for Excels returning for warranty repair work. It has been refurbished with more standing room available, and possibly a centre exit door has been added.

Notts & Derby; 263/264 (Y263/264 DRC) passed, perhaps briefly, from Trent to Notts and Derby (at Derby) for use on Derby Student college Shuttle vehicles.
Five of the former Mickleover vehicles at Trent Barton are expected to move to Notts & Derby, with 263/4 going back to Trent to replace Darts.

TM Travel; A takeover on 9th January 2010 of TM Travel by the Wellglade Group - owners of Trent Barton and Notts & Derby - is likely to lead to the end of Excel operation there, with Darts likely to replace them.
    Wellglade group numbers for their Excels are 1126, 1133, 1134, 1135, 1136 and 1140.

Many thanks for this update to; Adrian Healey, Colin Humphrey, Tom Stevenson.

Reading Transport - X962BPA reported last month sold to White Coaches of Culham (via Nigel McCree), X964BPA by November had also moved on to Three Star Coaches of Luton. Nigel McCree still has X961/3BPA for sale from Reading (Reading's last two Excels of course).
Also still for sale from Nigel McCree are Clarke's P333HBC and P322KAR.
TGM Group/ Excel Passenger Logistics - unlicensed since May 2009 (and still possibly so), Buses magazine reports that N204LCK has been sold to Adam Barham & Sons Ltd of Harlow, Essex - an engineering company (not an operator), who have undertaken work for TGM in the past...
Warrington Coachways - Sold P541CTO (115) to an unknown owner, though it has been relicensed for a whole 12 months.
Walter's Limousines - R215DKG is numbered 018 and has been seen operating the X88 from Oxford to Silverstone.
They also have R207DKG and P334NHJ, the latter was last licensed in April 2008.
X538NWT - this bus, new to First Manchester and has carried the number 60150, remains on the 'lost' list though is always licensed. Could it be that this bus which has not operated with First for many years (did it ever?!) is operating at an airport somewhere? Contributions as ever are welcome to slc9t9@yahoo.com
Operations - readers are invited to submit routes that Optare Excels can be found working in their local areas, or areas that they have travelled to, which can be shown here to aid like-minded enthusiasts to ride/photograph these buses whilst they are still operating in high numbers.

    04/10/09 - Website news...
Please excuse the further lack of news update, I am currently dedicating spare time to moving the fleet pages - these were positioned on free website space at Geocities which is closing at the end of October, so I am having to move the affected pages to 'paid-for' space.
When this has been completed an update will take place. Please email me at slc9t9@yahoo.com if you wish to receive email updates when this site has been updated.

Malta Bus FBY805 has been confirmed as being seen still in service during this month on Malta.
Other foreign reports (confirmations that buses are still there and operating etc) would be very welcome.

    News update...
    ...with grateful thanks to Buses magazine as usual for being able to help me here with rounding up the news here;

    Ex Ipswich
Carter, Capel St Mary, Suffolk or Wherstead, Ipswich - new operator of the type, P192SGV repainted and in service.
City Sightseeing, Cyprus - P194SGV and P196SGV from Ensignbus.
Transport for London (perhaps a driver trainer?) - R197DDX from Ensignbus.
Tate Travel - joining them, where P443SWX was already in use, is R189DDX from Ensignbus.

    National Express
The remaining non-RxxxEWU buses in Dundee - 7204/5 R402/8HWU have now moved south to Travel West Midlands for repaint etc before returning to service there.

    Other news, various sources
Premiere Travel - R206DKG (numbered 845) has joined the fleet, where R214DKG (846) is also operating. It is not known if this pair are on hire from a leasing company or whether they are outright purchases.
Vale Travel, Aylesbury - S930LBL acquired, possibly also S926LBL?
Warrington Coachways - P541CTO is now in use and numbered 115.
Meridian Bus & Coach of Potterpury, Northampton - R846FWW in use, since when please? This and sister R845FWW were with Raddoneur by April 2004 but have been with dealers after this.

    OP7 - 97 D 68192
    OP9 - 97 D 67773

From the June edition of Buses magazine, with permission:

R214DKG is out on hire to Premiere of Nottingham, from Dawsonrentals.

S156OCU from Go South Coast has gone to Sims Metals for scrap, leaving behind S35NRG and S157OCU in store - possibly still at Swanage.

    Bus Eireanne withdrawals, former Go North East;
    OP1 - 97 D 67771
    OP2 - 97 D 68189
    OP13 - 97 D 67782

    OP21 - 98 D 75401
    OP22 - 98 D 74673
Also in Ireland, contrary to my 'Airports' page in the operator index are T782KNW and T787KNW, rather than T781KNW and T788KNW. Can anyone confirm this??? I believe the report was they were working for Stenaline at Dublin.

slc9t9@yahoo.com if you wish to contribute news or photo's - thanks.

The 'reference page' will be updated within the next month or so, I hope! It's currently up to date to the start of this year. Again though, corrections and additions are very welcome.

Email myself at slc9t9@yahoo.com if you wish to be notified by email when this news page is updated.

    Two months with no update - sorry - plenty ro round up though;

Southdown PSV R916SJH moved from Reading Transport depot to a Southdown PSV location at Copthorne. As at 09/05, five former Reading Transport series 1 Excels were still present at Reading depot, one with a white painted rear end and one all over white, the other three are in standard fleet livery. A month ago there were eight/nine present there. Reading still operate four X reg series 2 vehicles.

Unknown owner (finance company in Wiltshire) - '35 seater' P506OUG seen on Ebay in March for a starting bid of just £3450, advertised as a non-runner requiring a new alternator and a few other bits and pieces. Ebay seller announced they had another 'matching 31 seater with 1 wheelchair space' for sale, presumably another P5xxOUG with the alternative seating layout. P506OUG attracted 0 bids.

Peoples Bus, Liverpool - S163UAL vanished off the radar, it was presumed to have become another re-registered vehicle rather than having been scrapped - this was indeed the case and it has become S70BUS, thought to have been from November 2008. S163UAL has been with Peoples Bus since June 2004.

Choice Travel of Wednesfield (whose legal name is Liyell Ltd) - This company, owned by D&G Coach & Bus of Longton, Stoke on Trent, once had up to seven Excels. A round up of what happened to them is provided here:
R741BUJ - owned from new, sold for scrap after an engine seizure + fire
R742BUJ - owned from new, sold to insurers 04/09 then scrapped following collision damage
R743BUJ - owned from new, stored, to return to service
R744BUJ - owned from new, stored, to return to service
S2CLA - acquired from Classic of Annfield Plain, moved to D&G but currently stored, to return to service
S3CLA - acquired from Classic of Annfield Plain, moved to D&G, operational
R987EWU - new to Capital of West Drayton, acquired in 2000, moved to D&G, operational

Ipswich Transport - a round up and some corrections of of their departed vehicles:
P191SGV at Ipswich in January, departed to Ensignbus by March
P192SGV at Ipswich in January, departed to Ensignbus by March
    P194SGV sold to Ensignbus
    P196SGV sold to Ensignbus
P443SWX sold to Ensignbus, to Tates Travel of Barnsley (operated in Ipswich colours)
R187DDX sold to Hardings of Tanners Croft, Redditch which after a short period of operation was re-registered to P5HCR during January 2009
    R189DDX sold to Ensignbus
R197DDX at Ipswich in January, departed to Ensignbus by March
T790KNW was sold to Roadliner Passenger Transport of Canford Heath, Poole (was not sold to Ensignbus as stated).

Smaller bits of news used with permission from Buses magazine
Lodge & Sons, Chelmsford - V936GUB ex Meteor Parking (a Go Ahead company) at Stansted.
Mikro Coaches of Crewe - R210DKG arrived from Dawson Rentals.
TM Travel, Halfway - R213DKG now in operation.
Trent Motor Services - 250 Y269DRC sidelined after fire damage, S156UAL sold to Norfolk Green.
Warrington Coachways - P541CTO acquired from Nottingham.
Bus Eireann - OP25 98-D-76561 was the second vehicle that suffered engine fire damage, and not OP30 as originally reported.
Classic of Annfield Plain - N204LCK still here, not moved to Burton of Haverhill.
Trustline, Stevenage - Sold: P501OUG/4/6/8OUG to Coachlease - a dealer. This explains more on the P506OUG saga listed at the top of the current news update.
C and S Coaches of Heathfield, East Sussex - not Heathfield in Devon, C and S have received R100PAR and R200PAR from Countryliner in Guildford. Did the pair, originally from Cheltenham, see any use in Guildford?
Norfolk Green - S156UAL has arrived from Trent, joining S170-2UAL from the same fleet there, and three ex Ipswich.
Go South Coast - HJ02WDG retured to Wilts & Dorset from a period of operation with Southern Vectis.
Hulleys of Baslow - no longer operating P273NRH (where did it go?)
Stagecoach - the magazine helpfully points out that those Excels based at Chestefield come under the Stagecoach Yorkshire banner, the ones at Worksop depot are Stagecoach East Midlands. At Chesterfield is 35025 P937SSK ex Highland Country.

Thanks for assistance to: Buses magazine, Chris S, C, J Grove, Colin Humphrey.

After the report in February of Speedwellbus of Hyde operating two Excels, I thought I'd have a look for myself. The 343 route from Oldham to Hyde operates three vehicles throughout the non-peak times, during the afternoon of 13/03/09 P502OUG (seen above) was the only Excel in use, the other two turns were a step-Dart and a mini bus. There are a few extra workings at peak times, so it's possible that the second Excel (N608JLY) comes into use then?
The 343 operates entirely within the Greater Manchester boundaries so the 'SystemOne' day tickets are valid on the route, the bus only ticket is £4.30.
Note P502OUG still has it's Diamond Bus coloured roof (with some blue from its Metrobus of Orpington origin visible), the other Speedwell Excell N608JLY is white with the same green skirt and a white roof.
The interior of this batch (P501-10OUG) is quite unique in that there is a sideways facing seat over the FRONT offside wheel arch! That seat can fit three passengers. There are no tip up seats or wheelchair space but the nearside seats in the low floor area (five rows) are single rather than double seats, the first of which faces the rear of the bus, the other four face forwards. On the opposite side there are five rows of forward facing double seats. The rear layout is similar to many Excels, such as those from Reading - with forward facing seats placed on the first step up to the rear section and sideways seats over the rear wheelarches which seat two passengers over each wheelarch.
Interior photo's on fotopic are available of P501OUG and the interior of that is nothing like that of P502OUG, but photo's of P509OUG show the interior I have described above.

    ex-Ipswich
R189DDX, P191/2/4/6SGV, P443SWX were all sold to Ensignbus.
T790KNW was also sold to Ensignbus but then moved to Roadliner in Poole.
R187DDX was sold to Hardings of Redditch which after a short period of operation was re-registered to P5HCR during January 2009.
At the end of January - P191/2SGV and R197DDX still remained at Ipswich depot waiting to be transported to Ensignbus.

    Thanks to Colin Humphrey

A quick update, the next update will be at the end of the month.

  • Speedwellbus of Hyde have surprisingly produced a long lost Excel in the form of N608JLY - an L960 that was originally from Thorpes of Kensington. This may have been N200FET originally (a report on the uk-bus-fleetnews Yahoogroup suggests it has spent some time at Manchester Airport), and along with N100/300/400FET it was thought to have been exported to New Zealand after finishing operating in London.
The FET reg plates were privately owned ones and were removed when sold and fitted to vans(!), two of the Excels became N607/8JLY, the former is confirmed as being exported in 2002, the other two *may have* been exported immediately without receiving further English registrations.

Also with Speedwellbus is former Diamond Bus P502OUG, the pair have been seen on route 343 from Hyde to Oldham in Speedwellbus white and green livery.

Thanks to Ian Roberts and GGC.

Further to the update on the 24th, T932-6EAN entered service with Blackpool Transport on Monday 26th January 2009 when route 7 increased its frequency from a 20 minutes (2hr 40 round trip) to 15 minutes (2hr 45 round trip) and became a 'guaranteed low floor' service. As such, 11 of Blackpool's 17 Excels are required on this route now.

222 - T932EAN departs Cleveleys bus station on the 1325 service 7 to Lytham on Thursday 29th January 2009. Note the extra lights on the front bumper, first fitted to T213HCW and fitted now to these five ex Reading Excels.

    224 - T934EAN in Blackpool on the 1125 Cleveleys-Lytham service 7, 29/01/09.
The 'Salcotes Road' terminues is actually spelt 'Saltcotes'...
222-226 also have new style tail lights (see photo of 212 lower down this news page) as fitted to the re-engined vehicles, these have been fitted despite not having been re-engined as there was plenty of time to add these features before they entered service. Also fitted has been CCTV cameras, three saloon cameras plus a camera above the entrance door (visible on the 222 photo) and one facing forwards in front of the driver.

210-217/224-6 (T210-7HCW,T934-6EAN) are in purple and yellow 7 livery, 218-223 (T218HCW,T880/1/4RBR,T932/3EAN) are in black and yellow colours for use on any routes.

A new chapter dawning in the history of Blackpool's Excels - shown here are four of the five acquired from Reading Transport, repainted and ready for use. Note the new rear tail lights and the lack of rear window from Reading days, an interesting feature as most Excels have the rear window as an emergency exit! These vehicles have a roof window though which counts as their second emergency exit, a similarity seen on Optare Solo's.

    223 - T933EAN, amongst some interesting Olympians!

    224 - T934EAN.

225 - T935EAN, 222 T932EAN. The black and yellow livery is for use on any route, the purple and yellow style is for use on route 7 (note the branding on 225 states 'every 15 minutes', the route 7 is currently every 20 minutes, the extra three purple Excels enable the higher frequency).

    In Blackpool, 210-7 - T210-7HCW and 224-6 T934-6EAN are in purple and yellow colors, and 218 - T218HCW, 219-21 T880/1/4RBR, 222/3 T932/3EAN are in black and yellow.

Hardings of Redditch have acquired former Ipswich Transport 187 - R187DDX, it initially operated with that registration in December 2008 but has been re-registered to P5HCR, which was formerly carried by a coach, during January 2009.

    All of the Ipswich series 1 Excels except 197 - T790KNW had been withdrawn from service by 01/09;
    188 - R197DDX w11/08, 189 - R189DDX w by 12/08 sold to ?? 01/09, 191 - P191SGV w11/08,
    192 - P192SGV w11/08, 193 - P443SWX w11/08, 194 - P194SGV w01/09,
    196 - P196SGV w by 12/08 sold to ?? 01/09.

Ensignbus are dealing with these vehicles once they are available for sale by Ipswich.

The remaining three series 1s already sold by Ipswich were:
    186 - R186DDX, 190 - P190SGV and 195 - P195SGV - all to Norfolk Green by 10/08.

    Travel Dundee Excels known to have moved south to Travel West Midlands are;
    7206 - R403HWU, 7203 - R404HWU, 7207 - R405HWU, 7208 - R409HWU and 7202 R410HWU.
Most made the move with time to spare before the end of 2008 and were placed in store, none had entered service by the middle of January 2009 but 7203 and 7206 had received the latest style of TWM owners' National Express livery, with red front ends.

    Travel Dundee should still have 7204 - R402HWU, 7205 - R408HWU, 7212 - R985EWU, 7209 - R990EWU, 7211 - R991EWU, 7210 - R992EWU, all originally from Travel London.

TM Travel V389KVY in Sheffield on 22nd January 2009. It was sold in 2008 by Central Connect after they took over North Birmingham Busways. It originally operated with Claribels Coaches, who still own V385-7KVY but have sold the rest of the batch; V388/90/2-4KVY.

Pages added on the Owner Index for the following newer operators of Excels, thus completing the owner index:
Network Colchester, Burton of Haverhill, Powells of Hellaby, Amos of Eydon, Harlequin of Dunblane, Tates of Darton, Stenaline of Belfast, Trustline of Stevenage, Grayline of Bicester, Premiere of Nottingham, Skills of Nottingham, Claribel Coaches (missing from the previous list), Trip in Time of Coatbridge, TM Travel of Halfway, M Travel of Normanton, Smiths of Keith, Norfolk Green of King's Lynn, Lugg Valley Travel.
Also pages have been added for former operators of Excels: New Horizon of Frating, and Cumfybus of Southport.

    14/01/09
The operator index (showing all operators who use Excels) has been updated for the first time since February 2008 to reflect owner changes. Yet to add though are new pages for operators who previously didn't operate Excels, but all of the other existing pages have been checked. Click 'Owner Index' in the panel on the left to have a look through these.
It is likely that the update on these will not be more than once every six months, though the Reference List which lists all of the Excels will be updated regularly, as will this news page to enable anyone interested to keep track on the latest news.

    09/01/09
I noticed that I did not type up the late November update here, so here it is (below it is the late December update):

Choice of Wednesfield D & G of Adderley Green, the parent company of Choice.
    Nottingham withdrew 544/7-9.
Red Arrow of Huddersfield appeared to have been using R208-10/2DKG for a period, December Buses magazine reports that they had returned to their leasing company from Red Arrow by then. No further details known.
Southern Vectis had gained 3612 HJ02WDG from Wilts & Dorset. Stagecoach Highland Country 35024 GAZ4632 had been sold to Dunsmore (dealer) during September 2008. The other pair (35023/5) have moved south within Stagecoach.

    (below added 26/12/08)
Nottingham City Transport P540CTO, P541CTO and P544GAU were sold to North West Bus Sales of Bolton (dealer), 540 and 544 moving to McKindless of Wishaw by 11/08.
Former P275NRH and P277NRH - now 35023 JAZ9851 and 35025 P937SSK have moved from Stagecoach Highland Country to Stagecoach Yorkshire.

R378DJN is now with Tates Travel of Barnsley, it's been with Ensignbus awaiting sale since the end of Town & Country.
Travel Dundee 7203 R404HWU, 7207 R405HWU, 7202 R410HWU have moved to Travel West Midlands, they have been stored at TWM's Miller Street depot since returning south, Miller Street is usually used for storing their vehicles.
V388KVY is now with Harlequin of Dunblane, from New Horizon Travel of Frating, Sussex.
V390KVY has moved to Amos of Eydon, Northants from New Horizon Travel of Frating, Sussex.
R245OCU, which has been 98-D-75401 with Bus Eireann for about four years, was unfortunately destroyed by fire on 3rd November 2008 when returning from a school run to its Tullow (County Carlow) depot. Most of the scrapped Excels have been cut up because of fire damage, which seem to usually be caused engine problems.

Stafford Bus Centre's ex Arriva pair - P315FAW and P316FAW were seen heading north on the M6 recently, off to a new home?

    Fleet Round up bits
P322KAR and P333HBC, ex Redby and originally Harris Bus have both recently been relicensed. Their current operating location is unconfirmed though they were expected to have moved to Clarkes of Tredegar along with P325NHJ and P329NHJ - reported here in May. The latter are still off-road.
P913/4SUM of Johnsons from Henley-in-Arden are believed to be for sale.
Former Cumfybus TIL2099 (the pioneer Excel, formerly N330EUG) plus N202LCK and N205LCK are still unlicensed.
Many others are off-road, please see this page for more details and to help keep the list up to date.
If you have stumbled across this website whilst looking to buy an Excel or two, please email me and I will provide you with website details for various dealers who have a number of the type in stock.
    New Engines
A round up from available information of those Cummins engined Excels which have been fitted with newer ISBe Cummins engines rather than their original 6BTs.
    L1150 - which originally had 215bhp 6BTs:
    S287RAG, S290RAG, S292RAG, S293RAG, S294RAG, S295RAG, S296RAG, T210HCW, T211HCW, T212HCW, T213HCW, T216HCW, T881RBR.
Also reported to have an ISBe engine is R250PRH which is an L1070, these were fitted from new with 160bhp 6BTs, so if this does indeed have a new engine - is it a smaller one than those fitted to the L1150s listed above?
    There are two ISBe units available, a 185hp - a 4 cylinder 4.5 litre and a 285hp 6 cylinder 6.7 litre version.

T212HCW on 15/11/08, showing the additional grills fitted to re-engined Excels in Blackpool, and also the newer rear light covers.

Go Goodwins have been operating R373DJN during 2008, under the registration of WSV550 - formerly carried by a coach, though in the past carried by an unidentified Bristol RE. R373DJN has very recently been for sale on Ebay.

    04/11/08

Classic of Annfield Plain now have no Excels, though purchased S2/3CLA new - these moved to D&G owned Liyell/Choice Travel.
Choice Travel of Wednesfield's R742BUJ is off the road with accident damage.
Konectbus of Dereham's V205ENU is off the road with fire (engine?) damage.
M Travel of Normanton now have former Happy Al's R14/5ALS, these have been re-registered R28/9MFM respectively.

Above information from 'Buses' magazine, used with permission.

    21/10/08
Ex Ipswich R186DDX, P190SGV and P195SGV have moved to Norfolk Green where they join S170UAL, S171UAL and S172UAL which moved there from Konectbus.
Many thanks to ipswichbus.co.uk for this information.

S931LBL, T932/3/4/5/6EAN withdrawn 07/08 at Reading, the T reg five are moving to Blackpool Transport.
R916SJH and S925/6/7/8/9/30LBL will have been the last series 1 Excels with Reading, and were to have bene withdrawn by the end of 07/08.
V388KVY and V390KVY to New Horizon Travel for Frating to Harwich International Shuttles, ex Claribels.
V389KVY is with KM Travel (ex North Birmingham Busways, ex Claribels), as per R211DKG (ex Rotala) and both had been painted in their fleet livery by late July. Stagecoach 35025 JAZ9857 is now P937SSK, originally P277NRH, and even carried NXI327 along the way!

    Following up the August update:
P507OUG is with Grayline of Bicester, P506OUG may not be with Trustline, though P501/4/8OUG are confirmed as being in operation with them.
R93HUS was in operation with McKindless by at least June, S556OGB was there by a year ago, October 2007, to clarify, the former Hutchison Excels are as follows:

    P813OET - Smith's of Keith

    UPDATES
In the August Buses magazine it is reported that the following were for sale from Central Connect/ Rotala Group:
    R206DKG, R207DKG, R214DKG, R215DKG ex South Gloucestershire,
S160UAL, S165UAL ex Flights Hallmark of Heathrow,
also oddly P502OUG, P503OUG, P505OUG, P509OUG, P510OUG ex Diamond Bus, although Diamond Bus are owned by Go Ahead and not Rotala so this could be an error.
P501OUG, P504OUG, P506OUG, P508OUG went from Diamond to Trustline of Harlow - where is P507OUG?
Red Arrow of Huddersfield now have R208DKG.
TM Travel of Sheffield also have R211DKG and R213DKG, the former confirmed in service in their livery on 8th August 2008.
Ventura Sales have R209DKG (seats missing in low area), R210DKG, R214DKG, P321KAR and R845FWW for sale (the latter has been with them for two years).
Meridian Line of Royston acquired R846FWW.
Countryliner of Guildford acquired R100PAR and R200PAR ex Thomas of Cheltenham, also known as Swanbrook where they were Park And Ride vehicles (hence the registrations).
Powells of Hellaby - V208ENU and V209ENU are confirmed as in use (see last months comment).
W602PLJ and W603PLJ have moved to Bluestar (Solent Blue Line) at Southampton, ex fellow Go Ahead company - Wilts & Dorset.
McKindless of Wishaw have added R94HUS, R95HUS and S556OGB (no sign of R93HUS) from Hutchison/First Glasgow (yes, it appears First sold some buses to another operator unusually), but WIL9223(P151BUG) and WIL9226(P154BUG) have both been heavily stripped and WIL9228(P157BUG) also appears to have be being used for spares. WIL9225(P153BUG) was the first of this batch to be stripped and eventually scrapped.
Smith's of Keith have ex Hutchison P813OET (originally HCO514).
Stagecoach Highland Country JAZ9857 has been re-registered again to P937SSK (it was originally P277NRH and then carried NXI327 for a while).
Stena Line of Belfast have T781KNW and T788KNW, originally delivered to Concorde Express at Heathrow and rarely tracked since then (along with T782-5/7KNW which are presumed to still be in England). This Cummins engined batch have dual doors on the near side, and an off side door too, presumably they have had these from new.
T790KNW is not part of the batch and was the first Excel to have a Mercedes engine, these days it operates in Ipswich. All of the T---KNW vehicles are 11.5 metres long, coincidentally though when on demonstration duties T790KNW did visit Ireland.

    UPDATES
V823DHN and V824DHN – ex Stockton Borough Council and Hatts of Chippenham are operating now with A Trip in Time of Coatbridge, news from Jeffs Bus Lane.

Trustline of Hunsdon (Hertfordshire) have taken some of the originally Orpington based P-OUG batch closer to London, formerly with Diamond Bus and sold after this became 'Go West Midlands'.
    Noted so far is P501OUG.

    TM Travel of Stavely (Derbyshire):
Have acquired at least two of the R373-80DJN batch, which until recently were ALL out of service.
TM are using at least R374DJN from Ventura Sales and R379DJN which had a previously unknown owner (also Ventura Sales?), acquired by 02/08.
News from Derby Bus Depot website.

V79JKG has been sold by Ashalls of Pendleton, moving to M Travel of Normanton.

V209ENU (and possibly V208ENU which I previously had listed with McKindless, presumably incorrectly), ex storage at Trent Barton, was operating with Powells Bus of Hellaby by 04/08.

    Added to a new page for First Glasgow in April were the following four Excels, nine Excels were acquired by First with the business of Hutchison of Overton;
    62935 - T735JGB
    62936 - T736JGB
    62949 - W49WDS
    62952 - W52WDS
The oldest five: P813OET, R93HUS, R94HUS, R95HUS, S556OGB are believed to have remained stored.

    Another big company acquiring Excels through purchasing a company has been Stagecoach, having bought the Rapsons Group, which consisted of Rapsons Coaches, Highland Country Buses, Orkney Coaches and Causeway Coaches. Three Excels operated for Highland Country buses;
    212 - JAZ9851 (becoming 35023?)
    213 - GAZ4632 (becoming 35024?)
    214 - JAZ9857 (becoming 35025?).
These three were originally East Yorkshire 275-7, P275-7NRH.

    Formerly Lost:
V511KMY - ex Metrobus of Orpington has turned up with P&O Ferries at Dover Eastern Docks, where it joins R818WJA, R819WJA, W438CWX, YJ51JXG and YA02YRP. It may have been there for years of course as it was licensed etc over the past few years, other than this I had found no record of this vehicle.
Source for this news was a Former Metrobus fotopic site.

    25/04/08
    Reading
Further to the note about S925LBL, Buses magazine shows a T reg vehicle and states that these are being painted white, but operated with vinyls, prior to likely sale. 925 was still present in Blackburn on 22/04/08.
    Blackpool

215 - T215HCW in use on 16/04/08. Only four of the eight line 7 liveried Excels were seen on their usual haunt of line 7 on this day, though 218 and 221 in spare livery were in use on route 14 in place of Dennis Tridents.
