1999, the first year.
During the early months of 1999 came the news that the Blackpool-Portsmouth working would be converted to HST operation, due to high passenger loadings.

Due to a fire on HST power car number 43122, and other shortages within the HST fleet, it was decided that a Class 47 hauled train would have to be used for the first four weeks of the Summer timetable of 1999.

Top'n'tail 47s (one loco on each end of the carriages) had to be used, due to the fact that there was no facilities at Portsmouth Harbour for the loco to run around the carriages for the return service, and because of a Railtrack ruling at Blackpool stating that trains shunting in the yard must have a brake van at each end (which was not always possible to achieve).

These are the KNOWN 1999 workings, several 47 hauled workings are unknown.

This revived locomotive haulage to Blackpool began when Virgin converted their 18:35 London Euston - Blackpool North (the 1P05) HST service to loco hauled operation with an electric engine as far as Preston - where a Virgin '47' would take over, whilst they refurbished the HST carriage sets.
